Anish Kapoor tower will mark London 2012 Games

A spiralling, 115 m-high sculpture by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor has been chosen as a spectacular new visitor attraction to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games. The tower, named the ArcelorMittal Orbit, will be situated in the Olympic Park and will be 22 m higher than New York's Statue of Liberty. The UK£ 19.1 million (€ 21.7 million) tower incorporates the five Olympic rings and offers visitors panoramic views of the Olympic Park and London. Anish Kapoor will work with structural designer, Arup’s Cecil Balmond who has worked on "some of the greatest contemporary buildings in the world", according to the Mayor of London’s office, including the CCTV building in Beijing. Steel company ArcelorMittal, owned by Lakshmi Mittal, will finance up to UK£ 16 million (€ 18.2 million) of the project’s value, with UK£ 3.1 (€ 3.5 million) million provided by the London Development Agency.
