Leighton Contractors Northern Hume Duplication

Leighton Contractors, part of the Northern Hume Alliance (NHA) - New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (the client), Maunsell Australia, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation Australia and Coffey Geotechnics – have completed a portion of the “Accelerated Southern Hume Duplication Package”, a New South Wales and Federal Government funded initiative. The package of work involves duplicating 35kms of the Hume Highway in Southern New South Wales between the Sturt Highway at Tarcutta and Holbrook. The duplication will be of freeway standard, providing divided two lane carriageways, safer access for adjoining properties, school buses, improved line marking and signage. Sections were duplicated are: Sturt Highway to Tarcutta- about 6km; Kyeamba Hill – about 9 km; Little Billabong – about 8 km; Yarra Yarra to Holbrook – about 12 km. The Hume Highway is the main freight route between Sydney and Melbourne and its duplication is expected to significantly improve road safety for all motorists and improve transport efficiency for communities and industries along this major route. The AU$ 418 million (US$ 373.5 million) design and construct contract started in August 2007and finished in December 2009.
