Hochtief was the highest ranking german contractor in the recent CE-100 listing, taking the number four spot behind France's Vinci and Bouygues and Sweden's Skanska, which took first, second and third, respectively.

In total seven Germany – based contractors made it into the top 100 listing but, after declaring itself bankrupt earlier this year, it is likely to be last time Walter Bau appears in the listing.

When CE published its first European contractors league table, the CE-50, in 1997 – the early years of the German economic recession – there were no fewer than 12 German companies in the listing.

Over the last eight years a succession of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies has cut the industry down to size and most names in the current CE-100 have developed international networks.
