BAM International wins two contracts in Tanzania

BAM International has won two contracts in Tanzania worth over € 55 million (US$ 69 million).

In a joint-venture with Denmark's Per Aarsleff it will renovate 150 km of the Tanzania Zambia Highway between Iyovia and Iringa for Tanzania's National Roads Agency (Tanroads). The contract is worth about € 30 million (US$ 37.8 million).

The project is supported by the Danish government and is expected to be completed by mid 2011.

BAM International has also started Phase 2 of the rehabilitation of Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, for Tanzania Airports Authority. The contract is worth € 26 million (US$ 32.7 million) and the project is expected to last two years.

The project is financed 50:50 by the Tanzanian government and a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Development Co-operation)'s ORET (Ontwikkelingsrelevante Exporttransacties - Development-Related Export Transactions) fund.

The work includes upgrading the airfield's ground lighting system, rehabilitation of existing taxiways, construction of new taxiways, upgrading the secondary runway and apron, improving the existing drainage system and improvement of the "environmental situation" around the airport.

BAM International had already completed Phase 1 in 2006. It laid a new asphalt surface on 3 km of runway and aircraft aprons, and replaced the runway lighting.
