Sarens delivers oil and gas equipment

Belgium-headquartered global heavy lift and transportation specialist Sarens has completed the delivery of seven 85 tonne Christmas trees (an assembly of valves, spools and fittings used to regulate the flow of pipes in an oil well) for an oil and gas company. The trees were all the same size and measured 5.438 metres x 5.068 metres.

The trees weighed 85 tonnes each. Their weight was monitored using Straightpoint’s Radiolink Plus load cell and SW-HHP handheld reading device

Sarens offloaded the trees from a vessel, transported them to the site, and offloaded them for temporary storage. The trees are being stored in Nacala-Porto, a city on the northern coast of Mozambique, from where they will be sold on by an oilfield services company.

For the lifting operations Sarens used a 250 tonne capacity Demag CC1100 crawler crane. It also supplied two crane operators and two banksmen to cover two shifts, as speed of service was essential, the company explained.

Along with various items of rigging gear including chains, slings and shackles, which were sourced from Sarens’ local stock, it also used a 100 tonne capacity Radiolink Plus load cell from UK-based load monitoring manufacturer Straightpoint, part of Texas-based lifting, rigging, and material handling hardware company The Crosby Group. To monitor the weight it also used a Straightpoint 1,000 m range SW-HHP handheld reading device. “Speed and efficiency of service is paramount to delivery of our services,” explained Julio Paco, lifting operations supervisor at Sarens. “Knowing the weight of items as they follow their supply chain to the point of use is a necessary component of that work. With the Radiolink Plus we were able to take readings at a safe distance using the [handheld] device.”
