Perkins wins Edison Award for SmartCap

12 April 2018

Perkins has been awarded a Gold Edison Award for its SmartCap oil filler cap that monitors engines and sends valuable data to end users.

The Edison Awards, named after Thomas Edison, are celebrating 31 years of honoring the best in innovation and excellence in the development of new products and services. Being recognized with an Edison Award has become one of the highest accolades a company can receive in the name of innovation and business.

“This is truly a great honor,” said David Nicoll, Perkins marketing director. “I accept this award on behalf of the great Perkins team, with over 85-years’ heritage and our commitment to constantly press forward with innovative breakthroughs that customers come to expect from Perkins.”

The Perkins SmartCap can be used on new and existing Perkins mechanical and electronic engines. Installed by replacing the existing oil filler cap, the solution allows end users to connect their mobile device to their engine via the free Perkins My Engine App on their smartphone. The cap monitors the Perkins engine and sends data direct to the app.

“We are watching the popularity of this product grow with each passing day as we meet the needs of our global customers,” said Michael Wright, Perkins general manager - aftermarket. “There is no device like it, the world’s first low cost engine-specific connectivity device. This is a breakthrough step forward in aftermarket for us and we are very proud of the team that made this possible and of this award.”

The SmartCap and My Engine App can provide the following information: engine running hours, engine location, service reminders and logs, and parts book and consumables information. The cap also provides information about the engine, such as build list, series, type, model and more.

The ballot of nominees for the Edison Awards was judged by a panel of more than 3,000 business executives including past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medical.

“Our judges recognized the Perkins SmartCap as a true innovator out of the many products in its category,” said Frank Bonafilia, executive director of the Edison Awards.
