Caterpillar upgrades its D4 dozer

Caterpillar has launched its new Cat D4 dozer model into the European, North American, Australian and New Zealand construction equipment markets.

The upgraded Cat D4 weighs 13.3 tonnes and is part of the company’s range of medium sized dozers, sitting alongside the Cat D5, D6, D7 and D8 models.

Previously known as the D6K2 dozer, the earthmoving machine is US Tier 4/Stage V compliant and is equipped with the manufacturer’s C4.4 engine that offers 130 horsepower (96kW).

The cab of the Cat D4 dozer features integrated air-conditioning and what was described as “a more comfortable” seat. The air suspended cloth seat can be adjusted to meet its operator’s personal preferences and is fitted with adjustable armrests.

In addition to a 10-inch touchscreen display that gives operators easy access to the dozer’s settings and features, the cab also includes a rear-view camera, programmable speed selector, 12V power connector and is “Entertainment Radio ready”.

Externally, major upgrades to the model include a lower sloping hood that provides up to 30% better visibility to the area in front of the blade.

Cat said, “The shorter sight lines mean the visual distance between the blade and the material pile is shortened by about 40 percent, so less time is spent backing up to get a full view of the material and the job gets done faster.”

The manufacturer, which has been making dozers for over 75 years, has also included its Slope Indicate, Stable Blade and Traction Control technology systems as standard.

For renters, a key improvement of the model is the longer service intervals of its engine oil and filters. The dozer’s oil, air cleaner and DEF pump filters have all been updated and now help to lower maintenance costs by up to 7%.

Optional extras for the new Cat D4 dozer, which is also available in a 14-tonne Low Ground Pressure version, include a foldable VPAT blade that reduces the width of the machine for easier transport and the Cat Grade with Slop Assist positioning system.
