Heavy lift and specialized transport company ALE has completed the installation of the Nacka Bridge near Stockholm in Sweden.

The curved arch bridge is part of the city’s development project and will be used to connect Kvarnholmen with central Nacka. It was 140 metres long and was installed across the Svindersviken inlet.

To transport the bridge ALE used a total of 80 axle lines of self propelled modular transporter (SPMT), with 32 axle lines of SPMT positioned at the back of the bridge and 48 lines in the centre. Two barges were used to transport the bridge before it was jacked down using jacking towers and strandjacks to stabilise the barge.

Teun Van Gorp, ALE project engineer, said, “This was not a simple job to execute and ALE faced the initial challenge of transporting the bridge from the construction site, situated in a narrow area on the slope of a hill. To transport the bridge turntables were used on top of our SPMTs to manoeuvre the bridge through the limited space available.

“Using a combination of techniques and equipment we were able to install the new bridge to meet the client’s schedule.”
