BKL moves lifeboat in tandem lift

German crane rental house BKL used a pair of Liebherr wheeled mobile cranes to move a 1950s lifeboat onto a new foundation at a museum in Munich.

An LTM 1200-5.1 and an LTM 1250-6.1 worked in tandem at the German Museum to help move the lifeboat. The cranes had specially made fastening equipment and cross beams so they could relocate the 23 metre vessel and its sub-structure to its new foundation. A total weight of around 62 tonnes was moved.

Despite restricted conditions, the lifeboat was moved within four hours.

The Theodor Heuss lifeboat was named after a former German president and has been on show in the outdoor section of the German Museum for 25 years. It has been temporarily relocated due to the construction of the museum’s new underground electrical control centre.
