Doosan Infracore's futuristic CX excavator concept has won the ‘Best of the Best Award' at the 2009 Reddot Design Awards.

This year's Reddot Design competition attracted more than 2730 entries, of which 206 were honoured and just 15 went on to be named ‘the Best of the Best'.

The Reddot Design Awards recognise products that are creative, innovative, and superior in quality.

Doosan aims to finish development of the futuristic excavator by 2018. According to the company the machine is designed to function at the highest level at different job sites, to be environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and be able to perform in severe working conditions.

In a statement Doosan said the judges particularly liked the CX excavator's Eco Transformer concept.

The company added other features in its ‘dream excavator' include an independent navigation facility, a hybrid power system and automatic operating system with artificial intelligence.

The Reddot Design Award, which first started in 1955, is one of the world's top three industrial design competitions along with the iF Design Award and the IDEA design award.

Only one of the 15 ‘Best of the Best' designs will be presented with the honorary 'Luminary' award on 24 November in Singapore.
