Schmidbauer, a subcontractor of Austrian company HF-Industriemontage, is using a 160 tonne capacity Liebherr LR 1160 crawler on a job in the heart of the European Court of Justice, which is being rebuilt to meet changing requirements. The two-and-a-half year, € 300 million building project includes construction of the Palais, which is a special challenge for the contractors. Existing walls are to be integrated into the new building and need extensive renovation. In addition, around 1,500 tonnes of the existing structure is to be reconditioned and re-used. A total of 5,000 tonnes of steel will have to be lifted and the beams weigh up to 12 tonnes and are up to 24 m long. Crane requirements included strong capacity at long radii, boom configuration flexibility and the ability to travel with a load on the hook. Maximum radius on site is 60 m, where the maximum load capacity, with luffing jib, is 2.5 tonnes.
