Us: Developer The Fordham Company has unveiled designs for its 609 m high, 85500 m² Fordham Spire in Chicago. Designed by Santiago Calatrava the 115-storey tower will sit on a 8900 m² site, yet has a footprint of only 1300 m². The remaining 85% of the site will be landscaped and open to the public. Besides office space, the tower will include shops, a hotel and apartments.

Based on a sculpture by Mr Calatrava, the façade appears to ripple downward in waves. This twisting effect will be achieved by rotating each floor by just over 2° from the one below for a three-quarter circle turn over the full height of the tower. Construction is expected to start next year and, when complete in 2009 it will be the US's tallest tower.
