Indian Irrigation

20 March 2008

Volvo Construction Equipment has been involved in one of many Indian water management projects – the Bhima Lift Irrigation Project – near the city of Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The basis of the project is to provide irrigation for 100000 ha of drought-prone land that provides a home to almost one million people. A spokesman for Volvo said that by siphoning off flood waters from the Krishna River during the four months of heavy rains each year, the excess water will be pumped along a series of canals to two reservoirs. From these a series of smaller canals will distribute the water throughout the district. The practicalities of the project involve over 11.5 km of major engineering, including lifting the water up over 61m using pumping stations, surge pools and diversion channels as well as extensive tunneling. Leading the project is director of Navayuga Engineering Co. Mr C Sasidhar.

A local Volvo dealer supplied the project with an L120E wheeled loader to speed up the excavation process of the 1.7 km tunnel from the pump house to the surge pool. This resulted in a reduction of three hours per cycle, allowing time for a complete additional blast each day, speeding progress through the tunnel by over 20 m each week and getting the project back on track. Not only was the loader faster, the L120E also used just over half of what the previous shovel excavator needed. In addition the loader was fitted with a Volvo low emission engine resulting in much improved air quality in the tunnel, the spokesman added.

Navayuga Engineering Co. has since added to its fleet of Volvo machines three EC210B LC, one EC360B LC and eight EC290B LC excavators.

Mr Sasidhar said, “We believe in buying equipment and invest over 10% of turnover on acquiring new technology. Speed and reliability are our main considerations, and support is a key element of that.”
