Kyrgyzstan sees country’s largest tunnel completed

News company Trend Agency has reported that the excavation of the Kok-Art tunnel, the largest tunnel in Kyrgyzstan, has been completed.

The Ministry of Transport in Kyrgyzstan is building a tunnel as part of the North-South Alternative Road project. This tunnel is located in the Kazarman-Jalal-Abad section of the road, along the border between Toguz-Toro and Suzak districts.

The projects goal is to ensure smooth traffic flow for two large vehicles traveling in opposite directions without causing any congestion. The entire project is estimated to cost US$136 million and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The ministry began constructing the North-South alternative road in 2014, which spans 433 kilometers and costs a total of US$850 million. The road is built in difficult mountainous terrain to connect the northern and southern parts of Kyrgyzstan, which are separated by the Fergana Range.
