Canadian marine transportation and shipbuilding specialist Seaspan Shipyards commissioned heavy lift and transport specialist Mammoet Canada to assist with the launch of an Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV). OFSV1 is the first of three vessels designed and built by Seaspan for the Canadian Coast Guard. The vessels will be used for scientific research and ecosystem-based management of Canada’s fisheries.

Mammoet provided 60 axles lines of self propelled modular trnsporter (SPMT), which joined Seaspan’s existing 32 SPMT trailer axles lines. The 92 lines of SPMT were used to move the 2,450 tonne ship from its load-out pier to a nearby floating dry dock in approximately three hours. Water ballast facilitated the ship’s float-off launch into Vancouver harbour following the load-out operation.
