NCC in Faroe Islands tunnel contract

Swedish-based contractor NCC has won an SEK2.7 billion (€274.25 million) contract to build two road tunnels in the Faroe Islands.

The contract will be split into two sub-projects, with the first costing SEK1.5 billion (€152.36 million) and the second costing SEK1.2 billion (€121.89 million).

The project includes two tunnels measuring 11.2km and 10.5km. The project also includes roads and roundabouts for connection to the existing infrastructure.

Construction work on the first tunnel – Eysturoyartunnilin – will begin in December, while the second tunnel – Sandoyartunnilin – includes a break-out option, meaning the customer can decide to pull out of the project completely.

The company said the order for the first tunnel would be registered in the NCC Infrastructure business area in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The projects are subject to approval of project funding by the government of the Faroe Islands.
