Liebherr's new CAL 64000 – 1500 Litronic heavy lift offshore crane will be mounted on Innovation, a jack-up vessel for a Beluga Hoctief Offshore joint venture to install wind turbines

Liebherr has extended its range of heavy lift cranes with a new 1,500 tonne capacity offshore model.

The CAL 64000 - 1500 Litronic was developed for Beluga Hochtief Offshore. In 2012 it will go to work on Innovation, a jack-up vessel with the capacity to install 5 MW and larger wind turbines. It is designed to help reduce assembly and maintenance time to increase productivity.

Capacity is 1,500 tonnes to 31.5 metre radius. The 105 m twin lattice boom on the mast type crane gives a lifting height of more than 120 m above deck. It is built around one of the vessel's four jack up legs, a first for a heavy lift offshore crane Liebherr said. To give an idea of size the slewing ring bearing weighs more than 100 tonnes and is 13 m diameter. Deadweight of the crane is 1,500 tonnes. The twin boom allows it to be parked over one of the vessel's front legs, which retains space on the deck for loading turbine components.

Power is from a 4,000 kW electro-hydraulic drive with Litronic control system and integrated power management.

The offshore wind farm project will entail installation of more than 80 wind turbines, more than 120 m tall and in a maximum water depth of 50 m.

The crane is also suitable for the oil and gas market, for example, to assemble and disassemble platforms and other structures, Liebherr said.
