New Tier 4 Perkins engine promises 7% fuel saving

Perkins has launched its new engine complying with EU stage IIIB/US Tier 4 final emissions limits – which it believes will find a wider global market including China.

Releasing the 404F-E22TA at Bauma China in Shanghai this week, the company said its latest entrant can deliver a 7% fuel consumption saving against previous models.

Its compact four-cylinder 2.2 litre turbo-charged engine is targeting the wheeled loader and six tonne excavator market. It is said to be the first of its size using common rail direct injection technology backed by authority electronics.

Perkins explained the 50kw engine’s electronic management system would help deliver significant performance improvements. It said the engine design could be easily configured for the Chinese market, which would require lesser Tier 3 emissions compliance.

The company added that the engine had been designed with longer service intervals than previous models and also featured intuitive user-friendly controls.

David Kidder, product manager for the 400 series, believed its compact design would be well-received within the construction market in terms of its efficiency and performance potential.

He said, “The launch of the 404F-E22TA represents a significant evolution for the 400 Series. For OEMs in the compact machinery market it offers some compelling advantages, not least of which is the ability to transform how machines perform and operate.

“The sheer flexibility of this engine in terms of machine integration is a real step-change and the benefits for OEM customers will be tangible and welcomed. It has retained the compact dimensions that are so necessary for this sector.”
