New township planned for Malaysia's Iskandar economic zone

Malaysian investment company Tradewinds Corporation has announced it intends to construct a new 378 ha township in Bandar Nusajaya, Johor, according to local press reports.

Announcing the plan earlier this week, chairman Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas said the new township, which lies within Iskandar Malaysia, will comprise a mixed development of high-end residential and commercial areas.

Tradewinds' COO Cheah Wing Choong said the company expects to complete the master plan for the township soon and will submit it to the authorities this year.

The new township is targeted at Malaysians working in Singapore, Singaporeans and also foreigners working in the republic, he said.

Iskandar Malaysia, formerly known as Iskandar Development Region (IDR) and South Johor Economic Region (SJER) is the main southern development corridor and economic zone in Johor, Malaysia. Iskandar Malaysia was established on 30 July 2006 and is named after Sultan Iskandar of Johor.

The Malaysian US$ 105 billion mixed-use economic zone, was unveiled in April 2007 at the inaugural Cityscape Asia real estate exhibition and conference, in Singapore.

It will contain a financial centre, educational zone, creative and design centre, theme parks, hotels and other tourism-related projects.
