New JLG compact: ‘super'

JLG has launched its G5-18A telehandler, calling it a ‘super' compact. JLG rates the 4899 kg G5-18A at 2495 kg lift capacity, 220 kg more than the bigger, 6300 kg G5–19A model, also a compact, released last year. The other difference is that the new model is built in JLG's Shippensburg facility – the first of its compact range to be made in North America.

Maximum lift height of the new machine is 5.5 m, which is 0.3 m less that its big brother, but its capacity at that height, 1996 kg, is about 170 kg more. Also, the smaller machine has a maximum reach of 3.33 m, about 0.2 m farther than the bigger machine's.

Lift capacity of the G5-18A at maximum reach is 839 kg, best in its class, says JLG. The bigger machine can lift about 160 kg more at maximum reach than the –19A.

The newer machine is 3.7 m in length, 0.7 m less than the other machine, and it is 1.8 m wide, 0.240 m less than the other. Its outside turning radius – 3.2 m – is less, too.

A Tier III-compliant Perkins 1104D in the G5-18A delivers 62.7 kW of power to a hydrostatic transmission, and steering modes are 4-wheel circle, 4-wheel crab, and 2-wheel front steering.

Attachments include standard and side tilt carriages, a variety of forks and buckets, a crane hook, a fork-mounted work platform, and a universal adapter, compatible with many of Bobcat's skid steer attachments.

Operator control is by a single proportional joystick. Brian Boeckman, JLG's product parent for North American telehandlers, said, “We spent a great deal of time...to ensure the G5-18A super compact telehandler was designed for top-of-the-line operator comfort.” Options to enhance that include: enclosed cab, air conditioning and heating, radio, and tilt steering wheel.

The company also said it has made the engine area easily accessible, and it has specified a maintenance interval of “...500 hours, which is 100% longer than other compact telehandlers.”
