The World Bank is to provide US$ 275 million for the Metro Manila Wastewater Management Project (MWMP), a project that will improve wastewater collection and treatment practices, and improve the water quality, in Manila, Philippines.
This project supports investments made by two local water concessionaires - Manila Water Company and Maynilad Water Services, which are embarking on a 25-year programme to achieve 100% wastewater collection and treatment for Metro Manila.
Work to be carried out includes a US$ 193.4 million investment by Manila Water in developing a sewage treatment plant and associated sewage lines covering North and South Pasig.
Maynilad will also invest US$ 178.3 million in sewage treatment plants and associated wastewater conveyance systems in Quezon City, Pasay, Alabang, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, and a septage treatment plant in the southern part of Metro Manila.
The World Bank finance package will contribute to both funds.
At present, Metro Manila generates about two million cubic metres of wastewater every day. Without adequate sewerage facilities, only 17% of this volume gets treated before being discharged into water channels in and around the metropolis.
