This weeks Picture of the Month is slightly different from the usual entries! The image has been sent in by UK company Outriggerpads and shows its spreader plates in use at the Halley VI Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf in the Antarctic. Outrigger pads, also known as spreader plates, are commonly used under hydraulic stabilisers of mobile cranes to help disperse ground pressure. For this task however, Outriggerpads supplied researchers at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) with specially designed pads to support the hydraulic legs of the Halley VI Research Station. The 1,200 x 1,000 x 40 mm pads weigh 46 kg each and have a 30,000 kg load-bearing capacity
