First job for Collett’s new girder bridge

Heavy transport company Collett has completed the collection, transportation and delivery of an 156 tonne steel casting using its new Scheuerle STB 550 tonne girder bridge in the UK.

The steel casting was collected at Sheffield Forgemasters International and transported to the Port of Goole for international freight forwarder, Expeditors. Once at its final destination, the casting will be used to form the drop hammer in a counter-blow forging press to manufacture titanium forgings, a spokesperson said.

The Scheuerle STB 550 girder bridge has a 5:2 payload to deadweight ratio. During the project it was accompanied by two 4-axle ballast 8 x 4 tractors to pull and push the combination. Two 10 axle Scheuerle Intercombi modules in 2-file configuration and a four axle power booster module were also used.

The steel casting was loaded at Sheffield and transported under police escort to the Port of Goole. On route a motorway lane was closed, allowing the whole vehicle combination to travel Eastbound on the Westbound carriageway. This was carried out to avoid weak structures, a company spokesperson said. The casting was transported at night.

Once at the Port of Goole, a team from the Collett projects, heavy lifting and marine division oversaw the loading of the cargo from the girder bridge to a vessel, for its final part of the journey to Antwerp.
