Manitowoc aids Wisconsin skiers

Wren Works used a Manitowoc 11000-1 crawler crane to help build a retaining wall at the Mont du Lac Resort, a skiing destination in Superior, Wisconsin, USA. Using 140 feet (43 metres) of boom, the 110 US ton (100 tonne) capacity crane lifted an 18.5 US ton (16.8 tonne) pile hammer to a height of 75 feet (23 m) to drive a series of 14 H-piles into the ground.

Gangs of timber that weighed 0.5 US ton (454 kg) were then lifted to a height of 60 feet (18 m) and inserted between the piles, creating a foundation for the retaining wall that will eventually shore up the resort’s new banquet room.

“We’re working on a 25 percent grade for this project so we needed a crane that had the power to traverse the job site,” explained Brook Benes, president of the Poplar, Wisconsin-based company.

“The 11000-1 had plenty of power to drive the tracks up to the top of the hill, and the crane’s capacity and easy set-up helped us to keep construction on schedule.”
