Italian manufacturer Locatelli has adapted a 30 tonne capacity GRIL 8300T rough terrain crane for potentially explosive environments

Locatelli has adapted one of its rough terrain cranes to work in potentially explosive areas.

The 30 tonne capacity GRIL 8300T 'Flameproof Conversion', sold to GNL Italia, adheres to all relevant European standards and includes a range of special features.

An explosive-proof case encloses engines, transformers, lamps and electronic drives, along with all other components that can release sparks and arcs.

The fail safe system limits the amount of energy stored in electrical circuits and protects, for example, limit switches, potentiometers and magnetoresistive sensors. Electrical parts that can create sparks or heat, such as solenoids and circuits, are clad in a resin-based substance.

During the work a number of original parts were replaced or removed. Replaced parts include, the slip-ring connector, all lamps and flashing lights, the battery and emergency button placed inside the cabin, as well as windscreen wipers, the ignition key and all wiring.

Inside the cabin, four analogue gauges on the dashboard and the switch-off battery have been removed.

Locatelli has also provided theory and practical training on the use and maintenance of the machine.

*The crane has been adapted in accordance with ATEX, Atmosphere Explosive 94/9/CE: European standards CENELEC EN 60079-0, EN 60079-1, EN 60079-7, EN 60079-18, EN 60079-11, EN 1834 -1.
