Contractor Shwe Taung Group has taken delivery of a Liebherr 180 HC-L luffing jib tower crane to construct a twin-tower office and residential extension to the Junction Square shopping mall in Myanmar.

Junction Square shopping mall is a four-storey structure on 9.2 acres of land. The two new towers are being built on an adjacent plot covering 15.8 acres. They will provide new offices, apartments and a retail extension.

The Liebherr 180 HC-L is the first Liebherr luffing jib to be used in Myanmar. It has a 16 tonne capacity and was delivered from Germany and supplied to Shwe Taung Construction Company by Octagon International (OIS), Liebherr’s Myanmar distributor.

Mike Tay, sales manager at Liebherr Singapore’s tower crane division, said, “The project's cement silo is also on the site. A road runs past the end of the site where the Liebherr crane is installed, and there is also a considerable amount of overhead electrical cabling.

“The only realistic choice was for a luffing jib crane, and as Shwe Taung Group has been building up its Liebherr fleet with other equipment, including a soil drilling rig and hydraulic excavators, the company asked us to supply specifications and site configuration using a luffing jib.

“We were able to demonstrate that even with the crane installed close to the site perimeter, which is necessary because a second crane is sited between the two towers, there would be no overflying of the street below.”

The crane will be affixed to the side of the structure and grow as the building grows. Completion is due in 2017.
