Brazilian railway investment

Brazil's São Paulo state government is to construct a BRL 800 million (US$ 364) addition to the Ferroanel railway, according to state news service Agência Estado.
Deputy governor and state development secretary Alberto Goldman, said the objective of the project, which will see the construction of the southern portion of a railway from the São Paulo beltway to the port of Santos, is to minimize bottlenecks caused by cargo being transported between the two cities.
The federal government has already committed BRL 300 million (US$ 142 million) to the project, said Mr Goldman.
The national ground transport agency (Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres) is currently establishing regulations so the two logistics concessionaires currently operating in São Paulo state - América Latina Logística (ALL) and MRS - can use the new railway.
Work on the southern section is expected to start in 2009, with completion expected in 2010.
