New York-based architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has won the competition to design a new Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

New York-based architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has won the competition to design a new Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The new BRL 65 million (US$ 35 million) MIS, which will occupy the site of an infamous nightclub, will use include extensive external access ramps and windows that will frame different views of Copacabana beach.

Covering 4500 m2, the new MIS will have space for permanent and temporary exhibitions, research facilities, a restaurant, and an open-air auditorium.

Construction, which is expected to start later this year, will take two and a half years.

The prersent MIS was founded in 1965 and houses a variety of photos, posters, films, videos, and newspaper clippings, all of which will be transferred to the new museum.
