Kobelco goes to sea

25 April 2008

Cyprus-based EDT Offshore Ltd has taken delivery of a new 250 tonne capacity Kobelco CKE2500-2 crawler crane modified for offshore work.

EDT Offshore will use the crane both for land-based work and offshore platform supply and maintenance jobs in the Mediterranean.

For offshore work Kobelco modified the crane in Japan by adding a sheave in the centre of the jib for man-riding. Also added inside the lower boom was a third winch, which was fitted with additional brakes and was Lloyds-approved for man-riding operations at sea.

Seven-layer marine paint and galvanized corrosion-resistant wire ropes were used on all four winches and guy cables. Electric emergency back up systems were also installed to enable a safe halt to operations in the event of an engine failure.
