Liebherr mobile crane gets updates

New features and updates include redesigned carrier cabin and third generation LICCON control system

The latest version of Liebherr’s 110 tonne wheeled mobile telescopic crane has new features and updates to the crane control system, the driver’s cab and the gearbox.

The LTM 1110.5.1, first shown at the Bauma exhibition in 2019, is now LTM 1110 5.2. It has a new driver’s cab, the new LICCON3 crane control system and the ZF TraXon DynamicPerform gearbox. There is also a new multi-disc oil-cooled clutch.

Future proofing 

The latest LICCON3 system is the third generation and comes with the same control features as previous versions but has updated software.

Liebherr said it has more storage and more computing power. The touchscreen function has been simplified and the crane is now prepared for future telemetry and management systems.

Nikolaus Münch, head of the control system department at Liebherr in Ehingen, Germany, said, “During the development of the new control system, it was important to us that crane operators, who are familiar with Liebherr cranes, would be able to get used to the new control system quickly and easily.

“We must be future-proof as the progress currently being made in microelectronics is immense. Complex applications, such as VarioBase, which require a great deal of performance data, can now be developed more frequently in the future.”

Cab comfort

Features of the redesigned cabin include a multifunction steering wheel, side roller blind on the driver’s door, improved instruments and modules, plus new displays.

Central locking is optional as are a cool box and a tyre pressure monitoring system, plus an automatic heating and climate control system.

The new gearbox is a design collaboration between Liebherr and ZF. One of the aims was to reduce downtime by eliminating overheating. It has a new wet clutch which transmits power via a wet plate pack with oil cooler.

When the crane is pulling away from a standstill heat generated by friction between the clutch plates is dissipated in the oil which is cooled via an oil-water heat exchanger in the engine coolant circuit.
