Currently emerging, literally, from Doha Bay is the I.M. Pei designed Museum of Islamic Art, a symbol of Qatar's ambition to become the cultural centre of the Middle East.

The 30000 m2 landmark building is being constructed 60 m offshore, with vehicle and pedestrian bridges linking it to the mainland. Built on piles with no surrounding land perimeter, the building will appear to rise directly from the waterline. On completion, in 2006, the museum will house an important collection of artefacts illustrating the development of Islam and the evolution of the Arab culture from various geographic regions.

The first stage of the construction process has involved the creation of a working platform for the building. Specialist civil and marine contractors, working under Hyder Consulting Middle East's guidance, have deposited more than 200000 m3 of granular fill, sunk 750 auger piles and driven 800 sheet piles. Inside, four themed zones covering science, calligraphy, carpets and paintings will introduce visitors to the museum.
