Unic works on Scotland’s canals

A Unic mini spider crane, sent by GGR Group’s Blantyre-based Scottish division, helped with lifting work at The Helix project near Falkirk, Scotland, UK.
The 3 tonne capacity URW-506 mini crane was used to install four lock gates, walkways and hand rails alongside the canal lock and basin at the mouth of the Forth & Clyde canal. The largest of the gates weighed 2.5 tonnes and measured 3.5 metres wide.
The Helix project is a £43 million project to create a public space, including an events area, wetland and a lagoon. Included in the project was also a kilometre of canal extension and a new lock system, a company spokesperson said. The project is part of a partnership between Scottish Canals and Falkirk Council.
Next to the site is the waterway’s new landmark, two towering horse’s head sculptures named The Kelpies. The 30 m high sculptures, designed by artist Andy Scott, weigh 300 tonnes each.
