Wagenborg replaces cooling unit

Heavy lift and transport company Wagenborg has replaced a rotation cooler weighing 103 tonnes at BP in Lingen, Germany.

Wagenborg originally installed the cooler in 2006 and were therefore chosen to carry out the new installation.

For the first part of the project, Wagenborg transported the new cooling unit from the fabrication shop in Stassfurt to the project site in Lingen using a 16-axle line conventional trailer.

Because the new cooling unit measured 24.55 meters long and 3.5 meters wide, Wagenborg’s engineering department had to develop an updated concept to carry out the exchange of the coolers compared to the previous installation process.

To remove the old cooler, a skidding system was assembled on site and used to position the cooler. Once in place, two 200 tonne capacity mobile cranes lifted the old unit from the skid beams and loaded it onto self propelled modular transporter (SPMT) for transport to the storage area.

Once out of the way, the cranes lifted the new unit onto SPMT where it was moved onto the skid track and manoeuvred into position.
