09 January 2019

Eurocell, a leading manufacturer and distributor and recycler of PVC-U (polyvinyl chloride - unplasticised) window, door, conservatory and roofline systems, has announced that it processed a record number of post-consumer window profiles last year – more than 1.2 million frames.

Having invested around £10 million (US$12.7 million) in the past decade in increasing its recycling facilities, the company exceeded its 2017 total by over 15%. As a result of this achievement, Eurocell was able to produce 12,500 t of products made from recycled material at its plant in the English midlands.

The process of recycling window profiles allows the entire lifespan of the product to become more sustainable.

When windows reach the end of their life, they are shredded, granulated and micronised. Using the granulated PVC-U, Eurocell then extrudes new profiles.

This process can be repeated up to 10 times using the same material, giving recycled PVC-U windows a lifespan of up to 350 years.

“It is a testament to our commitment to improving the sustainability of PVC-U that we have been able to achieve record levels of recycling in 2018,” said Eurocell head of marketing Chris Coxon.

“With the UK starting to run out of landfill space and 32% of landfill coming from the construction sector, we are proud of the part we are playing in helping to improve the sector’s sustainability record.”
