Strabag lands €225 million Poland contract

20 April 2017

Strabag has been selected to lead a PLN958 million (€224.6 million) infrastructure project to modernise rail lines between Kraków and Rudzice in Poland, and expand Kraków’s suburban rail network.

Working in a consortium with Krakowski Zaklady Automatyki, Strabag’s share of the contract is 80%, which equates to roughly €180 million net.

Said to be the largest of its kind in Poland, the project involves the renovation of 20km of rail lines 133 and 91, between Kraków’s main freight station Kraków Główny Towarowy and Rudzice, which will include the replacement of overhead lines, switches and signalling control systems.

Strabag will also be in charge of expanding Kraków’s suburban rail network. This means building a new metropolitan rail line that will require 55 new bridges, including two rail bridges over the river Vistula, measuring 234m and 227m in length.

The works are scheduled for completion in April 2021.

Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag, said, “We will not only build, but also design this infrastructure project. In this way, we can fully bring our expertise into this EU Connecting Europe Facility-funded project.”
