UK-based construction company Galliford Try has been awarded a £120 million (€131 million) contract to build 440 new homes at Blackhorse Mills in Walthamstow, London, UK.

Set to be one of the largest purpose-built rental developments in the UK, the mixture of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes will be 200m from Blackhorse Road tube station and will overlook the 211ha protected Walthamstow Wetlands.

With the aim of creating a community that has a focus on health and well-being, regeneration specialist Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) has appointed Galliford Try to construct a wellness centre, private dining rooms, flexible working space, roof terracing, a resident club room, and more than 1,800m2 of commercial accommodation for start-up businesses in the area, in addition to the housing.

Solar panels on the roof will provide communal lighting and power.

Dan Batterton, buy-to-rent fund manager at LGIM Real Assets, said, “Blackhorse Mills will be an exemplar of what future renting could look like, providing UK residents with the housing they deserve.”

It is expected that the first residents will move in between late 2019 and early 2020.
