World record bridge to break ground next March

Work on the world’s longest suspension bridge, in northwest Turkey, is set to start in March next year.

Turkish prime minister, Binali Yildirim, announced the official launch of the project at a cabinet meeting last week.

The 3.6 km bridge will cross the Dardanelles strait, connecting Gallipoli on the European side with Lapseki on the Asian side.

It is reported that the bridge will have the longest span of any bridge in the world, possibly running to more than 2 km. The current record is held by the US$ 4.6 billion Akashi-Kaikyo bridge in Japan, with a central span of 1,991 m.

When it opens, the bridge will carry the Kinah-to-Savastepe motorway, which is due for completion in 2023.
