A consortium of construction companies has been awarded a €427 million contract to construct an 11km section of the D1 motorway in northern Slovakia.

The consortium is composed of four partner companies – Doprastav (32%), Váhostav (32%), Strabag (32%) and Metrostav (4%). Strabag said its share of the contract was worth €140 million.

Construction of the motorway section between Hričovské Podhradie and Lietavská Lúčka includes 11 bridges, 12 tunnels as well as all access roads.

The D1 motorway is part of the planned E 50 international transport route leading from Paris, France, via Nuremberg, Germany, and Prague, the Czech Republic, through Ukraine to Russia.

Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag, highlighted the fact that this was the second roadbuilding contract the contractor had been awarded in recent months.

“After the R2 expressway, this is already our second large infrastructure order in Slovakia within the past few weeks. Slovakia is showing that it is pressing ahead with investments in infrastructure,” Birtel said.
