Hong Kong MEWPs for Managers first

An employee of leading contractor Hip Hing Construction Company has become the first plant manager in Hong Kong to complete IPAF’s MEWP for Managers training course via eLearning.

Herman Lee, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the construction industry, took the course online through rental company Modern (International) Access and Scaffolding, which is the only IPAF approved training centre in Hong Kong.

MEWPs for Managers is designed for those who plan, supervise and manage the use of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) in the workplace. It is available either through eLearning or as a half-day course at an IPAF training centre.

Modern congratulated Lee on completing the course and said he and Hip Hing, which was established in 1961, had embraced powered access equipment as the safest way to carry out temporary work at height.

Geoffrey Lee, Modern’s general manager said, “Increasingly contractors on major projects in Hong Kong and their clients are demanding stringent safety measures in place and requiring the highest standard of training and risk management on their work sites.

“Managers and supervisors are increasingly switching on to the importance and value of quality courses such as IPAF’s MEWPs for Managers, which can save time, money and ultimately go a long way to helping plan the job to be as safe as it possibly can be.

“It is critically important for managers and supervisor and all employees and sub-contractors to be professionally trained. This means fewer stoppages and minimises the risk of people being injured or killed.

Lee added, “There is no excuse for cutting corners where safety is concerned, and no defence after an accident occurs for not validating or verifying that qualifications were bona fide and of sufficient standard to prepare the operator to work safely and well.”

Modern’s IPAF-approved training centre offers a range of training, including on how to load and unload MEWPs, carrying out a pre-delivery inspection, how to choose, inspect and use a harness correctly, site assessment training to select the correct MEWP for the job and operator refresher courses.
