New Hiab test centre

Hiab has opened a crane testing centre at its loader crane factory in Hudiksvall, Sweden. The company describes the centre as the most advanced of its kind in the world and will allow precise testing of products and components.

The centre took three years to develop and cost €2.5 million (US$3.9 million). Almost 700 tonnes of cement was used for the reinforced floor, which rests on 137 concrete support pillars sunk 8 m into the ground to deliver enhanced stability under extreme test conditions, explains Hiab. The facility also has special workbenches and rails that allow tests to take place outside on the very largest cranes.

“The new facilities will enable Hiab to continue its pioneering development of cranes and related technologies and speed the time-to-market of exciting new pipeline innovations,” says Harri Ahola, Hiab Cranes senior vice president.

Ahola added that the centre will also be used to test the quality and performance of parts delivered by sub-suppliers from around the world to Hiab and other business areas of the Cargotec Corporation.
