ANSI standard may change, more cost for higher gate strengths

25 March 2008

Dealers, rental companies and end users – as well as the likes of manufacturers – should be in the know regarding new changes to ANSI Z359.1. The changes, as explained to ALH by Jeff Stachowiak, safety trainer with giant Sunbelt Rentals, is that the weight capacity on both the gate and snap hooks will be changed. When the standard becomes final, manufacturers will have to provide a snap hook that has a 3,600 pound gate strength. This is quite an increase from the current standard that requires the gate strength be at least 220 (gate face) and 350 pounds (gate side), respectively. The standard allows manufacturers two years to change to the new requirement.

This will mean higher costs of production for manufacturers and a higher retail price for rental yards and contractors.
