19 February 2009

Bangladesh has announced plans to build a BDT 20 billion (US$ 290 million), six-lane tunnel under the Karnaphuli River.

Making the announcement during a visit to construction of the Third Karnaphuli Bridge, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain Friday said the tunnel, the first of its kind in the country, would help ease congestion in the port city of Chittagong.

Construction of the 1 km-long, 3.05 m-high tunnel, which will feature three lanes of traffic in each direction, will begin once a suitable site has been found and the correct environmental and feasibility studies have been completed, said the Minister.
