CONEXPO: SHOW OF THE YEAR

04 March 2008

Every three years the ConExpo show is held in Las Vegas, US. It is a must-see event for anyone working in the construction industry and related sectors, plus anyone in the world who has an interest in machines and heavy equipment.

If you like to plan ahead, use this guide now to work out what you want to see at ConExpo 2008 and plan where to spend your days. Crane and transport equipment and vehicle manufacturers and service companies will be out in full force and most will use the event as the launch pad for new and improved products.

A round 125, 000 visitors (25% up on the last show in 2005) are expected at the five-day event, including visitors to the International Exposition for Power Transmission, running alongside. Organisers say there will be about 2,000 exhibitors, at least 200 of which (10%) will be directly relevant to people into cranes, other lifting equipment and specialized transport. Around 20 hectares of space will be occupied, indoors and out.

Head to the Gold Lot outside to find the majority of crane and transport manufacturers. Manitowoc says it will exhibit 12 cranes there, seven of which are new. About half that number will be more like it for the other major manufacturers at the event. See under the manufacturers heading in what follows here. Expect the Chinese manufacturers to have a stronger presence at the show and out in the market place this year too.

More than 85 industry organizations from around the world are also expected to participate. Some will be holding their annual conventions during the exhibition. In addition, there will be 10 international pavilions for Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Attendees can also make use of the education programme. It covers a range of industry issues and trends, plus management and applied technology. In the new Safety Zone will be live demonstrations and information about jobsite safety.

“ConExpo-Con/AGG is a living example of the incredible advances made by the construction industry. It is a culmination of the industry's contributions throughout our history and a showcase for our future,” is how a show spokesperson sums it up.

KOBELCO CRANES NORTH AMERICA

GOLD LOT G-320

The SL6000 lattice boom crawler crane will make its US tradeshow debut. As standard it has an 84 m maximum main boom, 108 m maximum long boom and a luffer option of 60 m main boom plus 72 m luffing jib. The Super Heavy Lift configuration (which includes HL mast and an additional 250 tonnes of palette counterweight) – 84 m maximum standard boom, 126 m maximum long boom and a luffer option of 84 main boom plus 84 m of luffing jib.

For transport the largest individual part is the 3 m wide carbody and upper structure weighing 64 tonnes. That can be broken down into 41 and 23 tonne sections. By removing the mast assembly with an ‘easy-attachment' system, it can be further reduced to 32 tonnes.

Each crawler track assembly weighs 40 tonnes and the boom and jib sections can be nested for transport. The winches are in the lower boom, which reduces the transportation weight of the base machine.

Also on show will be the 100 tonne capacity CK1000-III and 250 tonne capacity CK2500-II models.

LIEBHERR

GOLD LOT G-370

The 4,600 square metre display stand will house 27 Liebherr products from the full range of construction equipment. The cranes on show will be three wheeled mobiles, two crawlers and two towers.

The highlight will be the new 600 tonne capacity LR 1600/2 lattice boom crawler crane. Primary characteristics of the new model, according to Liebherr, are outstanding load capacities, variable boom and derrick systems, and components with weights and sizes that have been optimised for economical transport.

This new crane achieves its 600 tonne maximum load capacity with a 48 m main boom and derrick system at a 10 m working radius. Maximum load moment is 8,085 tonne-metres and the maximum boom and jib combination, or system, length is 180 m.

Cost efficiency in wind turbine assembly operations was a vital criterion in the development of the LR 1600/2. The SL main boom can be erected up to a length of 102 m without a derrick system. Developed from this system, a 108 m SL system with a 12 m fixed jib is available, which, again without a derrick or second crane, can be erected up to an under-hook height of 117 m.

Load capacity in this configuration is more than 95 tonnes, making it suitable for mounting wind turbines in the 3 MW class on 100 m towers. Using the derrick system, the same turbines can be mounted on 120 m towers.

The other crawler crane on show will be the 100 tonne capacity LTR 1100 with telescopic boom. The hybrid concept is designed to unite the advantages of a telescopic crane and those of conventional crawler cranes. It has a 52 m boom developed from an LTM series all terrain mobile crane.

Mobile cranes on show will be the 130 tonne capacity LTM 1130-5.1 all terrain on five axles and the LTF 1045-4.1 truck mounted crane. It is a development of the upper works from the three axle LTM 1045-3.1 all terrain mounted on a four axle commercial truck chassis-cab instead of the AT carrier. The version shown will use a US-built Kenworth truck.

On show from the tower crane ranges will be two large models, one in the 355 tonne-metre class, the other in the 550 tonne-metre class. New features on the 355 HC-L 16/32 Litronic luffing jib crane include the SPS control system, which, for example, allows horizontal movement of the load. As the jib is moved, the control system operates the lifting gear automatically so that hook height remains constant.

Other innovative details on the 355 HC-L are the bolted-on climbing console, and rapid re-reeving from a single to a double rope run. The climbing console can be detached for transport. This reduces the transport dimensions and weight of the slewing ring support to be suitable for container transport.

The large 550 EC-H 20 Litronic crane will be a 20 tonne version but 12 and 40 tonne versions are also available. The 550 EC-H picks up to 3,500 kg at its maximum working radius and the Litronic version increases this capacity to 4,000 kg. The crane exhibited has free movement up to a hook height of 86.9 m and an undercarriage with a track width of 10 m.

Also at the show will be the 30112S, also introduced at the ICUEE trade show. The S-style has a ride-around operator station to allow maximum visibility of the load as it is lifted and repositioned. The 34 m boom yields a tip height of nearly 51 m when fitted with the optional telescopic jib. The machine on display will have a fully enclosed operator cab, telescopic jib and the ROCSolid outriggers, all optional equipment for this new generation S-Style crane.

Also at the Manitex booth will be the 35124C, a 32 tonne machine with a maximum tip height of 51 m, and the 30102C, a 27 tonne machine with 31 m boom reaching a maximum height of 48 m when fitted with the optional 14 m telescopic jib.

Also new will be a pair of truck cranes, the 35 tonne capacity Grove TM500E-2, on three axles, and the 100 tonne capacity TMS9000E on four axles. The former replaces the TMS500E and has an 8.8 to 29 m four-section boom, while a longer 9.8 to 31 m four-section boom is optional. Maximum tip height for the TM500E-2, with the optional 13.7 m offsettable telescopic swingaway extension, is 47 m. Maximum tip height for the TMS9000E is 72 m.

On show for the first time in the US will be the 35 tonne capacity Grove RT540E rough terrain. The 35 tonne capacity crane has a 31 m, four-section full-power main boom and the offsettable telescopic swingaway jib extends tip height to 46.9 m.
