The Grove GMK6250L needed restoring after it fell into the port of Rio de Janeiro and was damaged by sea water

A Grove GMK6250L all terrain crane has been refurbished at the Manitowoc EnCore facility in Passo Fundo, Brazil.

The crane, which is owned by crane rental company Locar, São Paulo, needed restoring after it became submerged in the port of Rio de Janeiro and was damaged by sea water. Locar chose to have the crane rebuilt rather than buying a new one.

For the refurbishment, the 220 tonne capacity AT was disassembled and washed before being rebuilt with new parts. Structural repairs and the replacement of electrical components were also carried out.

Rodrigo Stefanini, senior manager EnCORE, Manitowoc Crane Care, Latin America, said, “Most of the electrical components of this 6250L were damaged and needed to be replaced, including the harness, cables, connectors, electronic units and sensors. As the crane fell into the salty sea water, all of those components were rusty.

“The engine of the crane had some minor damage that we were able to repair with the local engine representative. The Allison transmission was also repaired and the clutches were replaced. The powertrains and differentials needed only an inspection and thorough cleaning.

“After a complete disassembly of the hydraulic components for inspection, cleaning and rust treatment, we found that for the most part, they were not damaged. Some valves were blocked due to corrosion and they were subsequently replaced.”

Before the crane was delivered back to Locar, it was repainted and underwent load testing.

“This was a momentous project for us at the Passo Fundo EnCore facility," Steffanini said. "The GMK6250L was EnCore Brazil’s first complete rebuild. It was a speedy and successful repair and we were able to witness the rewards of our efforts."
