Granite Subsidiary in for US$ 184 m Ohio tunnel project

Kenny Construction and Obayashi Corporation have been jointly awarded the contract to build the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel (OCIT).

Kenny Construction is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Granite Construction, one of the largest construction companies and construction materials producers in the US.

The City of Akron has offered Kenny 65% of the US$ 184 m project, which has been booked into Granite’s third quarter revenue backlog for 2015.

A press release from Kenny announced that it will initially be responsible for elements including a conveyance and storage tunnel, drop shafts, diversion structures, consolidation sewers.

At almost 2 km in length, the OCIT will have a finished inside diameter of 8.23 m. Its purpose is to control sewer outflow at nine separate locations, and store more than 94 m litres of combined sewer overflow, to reduce impact on local waterways.

Construction on the tunnel has already begun and the project is scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2018.
