Kalmar in STS modification project

03 October 2013

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has raised the height of four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC).

The STS cranes are for APM Terminals Algeciras in southern Spain. The height of the STS cranes was increased by 5.8 metres each so they could handle Triple-E vessels arriving at the port, a company spokesperson said.

Eduardo Prat, Kalmar South EMEA vice president, said, "Like many ports, Port of Algeciras is seeing a significant increase in the size of ships and this means they need to find innovative solutions to increase their port side handling capacity. Increasing the STS crane height provides an expedient and cost-effective answer to boosting the crane capacity."

The project began in June this year and took four months.
