The Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway Contract 423 in Singapore

The Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway Contract 423 has won the Civil Engineering Award at the Singapore Building and Construction Authority's (BCA) Design and Engineering Safety Excellence Awards.

Mott MacDonald Singapore provided design services to Samsung Corporation for the project which featured a 3km underground section, 2 km of which was beneath an existing canal and 1 km underneath a road.

The presence of deep soft soils and sensitive adjacent structures provided numerous challenges throughout the project. This led to the expressway being classed as one of the most difficult projects in the world by the Land Transport Authority, the project's client.

The Civil Engineering Award was presented to Mott MacDonald's You Fook Hin by Singapore's Senior Minister of State for National Development and Education, Grace Fu, at the BCA awards dinner.

Mr Fook Hin said, "Protecting public safety when we carry out our projects is the top priority. It is a great honour for us to win the BCA award."
