Danish contractor NCC has been awarded a SEK1.5 billion contract to construct the first phase of the Carlsberg Byen mixed use development in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Being built on land that formerly housed the Carlsberg brewery, the Carlsberg Byen project will cover 101,000m2, including a 60,000m2 campus for the University College Copenhagen.

Further development will include 6,500m2 of retail space, 3,500m2 of office space, 15,000m2 of residential space and nearly 20,000m2 of basement space.

Work on the first phase will begin in summer 2013 with development scheduled for completion in early 2017.

The brewery reclamation site will see a total of 567,000m2 developed in the next 20 years.

NCC has longstanding experience of developing former brewery areas in Copenhagen, having already been involved in developing Tuborg’s former production area in Hellerup into a vibrant area comprising residences, offices and stores.
