Genie has unveiled four updated telescopic booms, a redesigned articulated boom for the North American market,a modernised hydraulically-driven generator, and a handheld diagnostic tool. The details of each are outlined below:
Dual lift telescopic booms
Genie telescopic S-60 XC, S-65 XC, S-80 XC and S-85 XC booms now offer a dual lift capacity of 660-pound (300 kg) unrestricted and 1,000-pound (454 kg) restricted. Also, the Genie Xtra Capacity (XC) feature gives customers the ability to work with up to three people onboard while still leaving room for tools and jobsite materials.
“The XC nomenclature lets customers know that the new Genie S-60 XC, S-65 XC, S-80 XC and S-85 XC models comply with the overload restriction guidelines in the new ANSI A92 and CSA B354 industry standards in North America, as well as European EN280 and Australian AS 1418.10 standards,” said Zach Gilmor, Genie product manager, Terex AWP. “And thanks to updates in the design and technology of these new booms, these Genie XC models can carry more load — 660-pound (300 kg) unrestricted and 1,000-pound (454 kg) restricted capacity — than their predecessors. Genie XC booms are designed to perform.”
New to this generation of telescopic booms, these four new Genie XC models feature automatic envelope control. This is the ability to automatically retract as the booms reach their operating envelope. They are also equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and limits the operating envelope to match the load chart.
The Genie S-60 XC, S-65 XC, S-80 XC and S-85 XC booms also feature an expanded working zone due to a new chassis tilt sensor incorporated into the machines’ function. This chassis tilt sensing technology gives operators access to different ranges of motion based on the chassis angle. It is engineered to automatically cut-out certain lift and drive functions of the machines when the tilt activation setting is reached.
“Equipped with this new technology, these four new Genie XC booms will not only carry more load than ever before but will also be able to maximize access hard-to-reach work areas on challenging jobsites,” added Gilmor.
The four new Genie XC models also feature the new Genie Lift Power generator solution. This system includes a dedicated hydraulic circuit, a right-sized breaker and no pressure switch to reliably run the unit, and allows for the power to lift and drive during operation. The Genie Lift Power system is available in three options — 3 kW, 7 kW and 12 kW — to provide power solutions for customers worldwide.
All Genie XC booms, including these four new models, have been updated with a CAN-based control system, which incorporates the Genie SmartLink control system features. “Operators will find the control layout on these booms to be consistent and intuitive, making the operation of the booms easy and straightforward,” the company said.
The Genie S-60 XC boom has 65 ft 9 in (20.04 m) working height with 50 feet, 10 inches (15.49 m) of outreach. The Genie S-65 XC model has 71 feet, 1 inch (21.67 m) working height with 54 feet, 2 inches (16.51 m) of outreach. The Genie S-80 XC model boasts 86 feet (26.38 m) working height with 68 feet (20.83 m) of outreach. The Genie S-85 XC boom has 91 feet (27.91 m) working height with 74 feet (22.71 m) of outreach.
All four new Genie XC booms are available with a 74-hp (55kW) Tier 4F/Stage IIIB diesel engine. The XC design on these boom lifts also includes a 6-foot (1.83 m) dual entry or an 8-ft (2.44 m) tri-entry platform with side-swing gate to make it easy to get people, tools and jobsite materials in and out of the basket.
“Genie XC booms can reduce the number of lift cycles, as well as the amount of equipment customers need to get tools and materials to work areas at height,” says Gilmor. “Doing more with a single unit saves time and increases productivity.”
The Z-45 XC boom for North America
The second Genie new product launch is the dual capacity Z-45 XC articulated boom for the North American market. The boom is a redesigned version of the company’s rough-terrain Z-45/25 J RT diesel powered articulating boom. The Z-45 XC has a dual-envelope design which Genie said provides an unrestricted platform capacity of 660 lb (300 kg) and a restricted capacity of 1,000 lb (454 kg). The boom has a maximum working height of 51 ft, 6 in (15.9 m), a maximum horizontal outreach of 24 ft, 9 in (7.55 m), and an up-and-over clearance of 24 ft, 7 in (7.5 m).
Genie said the Z-45 XC has a full-time, positive drive traction system and an updated oscillating axle system to aid navigation of rough terrain, providing the Genie Z-45 XC boom with up to 45% gradeability.
Engine-wise, the Genie Z-45 XC boom is equipped with a standard Deutz D2.9L4 48 hp (35.8 kW).
Genie says the XC articulated boom unit has a tight turning radius and there is zero tail swing. In order to increase performance, decrease calibration time, and improve overall productivity, the new XC model also has the ability to carry out zero-load field calibration, Genie said. It is equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and adjusts the allowable range of motion to match the load chart.
“Providing operators with the ability to perform a wider range of heavier lift and access tasks on rough terrain, using a single machine without the support of other equipment, the Genie Z-45 XC articulated boom is well-suited for aerial applications on unfinished construction sites,” commented Marie Engstrom, Genie product manager, Terex AWP.
Genie Lift Power generator
Genie has also launched the Lift Power system – its latest hydraulically driven generator. The generator is designed to provide continuous power for driving, repositioning, lifting, as well as powering tools.
The new Genie Lift Power system includes a dedicated hydraulic circuit, including a third hydraulic pump separate from the lift and drive hydraulic pumps, a right-sized breaker, and no pressure switch. According to Genie, when boom operators turn on the generator, the dedicated pump drives hydraulic fluid to the generator, which spins to produce power.
“This new configuration is a significantly different design from its predecessor system,” explained Zach Gilmor, Genie product manager, Terex AWP. “Instead of relying on the lift or drive hydraulic circuit, this new generator system runs on a stand-alone circuit with a separate hydraulic pump to supply continuous electrical power from the generator. This allows our customers to drive and reposition the machine, raise the boom, and power tools simultaneously for increased productivity.
“It requires much less time to spool up — power is almost immediately available with the flip of a switch and it offers increased productivity that translates to no power interruptions when using the generator to power tools, including during welding processes.
“When boom operators turn off the generator, the system’s dedicated hydraulic pump is engineered to continuously run, cycling hydraulic oil through the oil cooler which cools and filters the oil back to the machine’s hydraulic tank. This modern design runs the unit reliably, efficiently supplying power when it’s needed.”
The Genie Lift Power system is available in three options — 3 kW, 7 kW and 12 kW — to meet the needs of operators worldwide.
Genie Tech Pro Link diagnostics tool
Finally, Genie has developed the Tech Pro Link – a handheld diagnostics tool that can be used to monitor a machine’s sensors (including engine temperature, oil pressure, fuel levels and battery voltage), calibrate the machine, make speed adjustments during pre-operation inspection, and receive fault code information.
The Tech Pro Link is designed to work independently of a laptop although future capability will allow technicians to download the data to a laptop or desktop computer for additional analysis and tracking, the company claimed.
Its has a four-pin Deutsch connector for integration with platform and ground controls. It’s also equipped with mini-USB ports for charging in service vehicles or for downloading software updates. A magnet on the back of the device enables service technicians to work hands-free while still accessing the data. It will also soon be WiFi-enabled to work wirelessly around the machine, Genie said. The device comes with a built-in flashlight, too.
“The Genie Tech Pro Link device is currently compatible for use with the CAN-enabled control systems on mid-sized Genie S telescopic Xtra Capacity (XC) booms,” commented Harrison Jenkins, Genie engineering manager, Terex AWP. “The information is readily available without having to navigate layers and layers of menu structure. It is designed to provide real-time information that will keep our new Genie XC boom lifts up and running, maximising operators’ productivity.
“Engineered to be used anywhere, the Genie Tech Pro Link device enables service technicians to perform settings and calibrations through the service tool, and it provides full error code readouts for simple diagnosing and troubleshooting.
“Its compact design allows it to fit in a user’s back pocket or tool belt. And, it is engineered for outdoor use, in nearly any weather conditions. It’s water-resistant and Mil-STD-810 shock-tested, too.”
