Cimpor to build cement plant in Mozambique

24 June 2015

Cimentos de Moçambique, a subsidiary of Portuguese cement producer Cimpor, has announced plans to invest US$ 250 million in a new integrated cement plant in Nacala, Mozambique.

According to Cimpor, Cimentos de Moçambique, has been producing cement since 1920. Its current footprint in Mozambique includes an integrated cement production plant in Matola and four grinding plants in different locations. Cimentos de Moçambique has a cement production capacity of 3.1 million tonnes per year and a workforce of 1,200.

The company’s assets in Nacala include two grinding units and limestone reserves which it has a licence to extract. The addition of a cement kiln to the current infrastructure is expected to add 1.5 million tonnes per year of capacity when it comes on stream in 2018. Cimpor said the production would replace imported clinker.

“The new capacity to be installed increases the efficiency of the response to local demand for cement, while Cimentos de Moçambique recognises its role in driving the sustainable economic development of the Nacala region,” said a company statement.
